Birds of India
In collaboration with Belgium Embassy, Mumbai
Initiated by St+art in collaboration with the Belgian Consulate, artist Dzia was invited to create a mural in Mumbai’s Mahim (E) Art District. Known for his unique graphic style, the artist creates vibrant imagery inspired by the various species of birds found in India. Through a mosaic of bright colours, he showcases birds like the Eurasian golden oriole, the magpie-robin and common tailorbird, rendering them in bold and geometric lines. Dzia’s work reincorporates animals into an urban environment to draw viewers in to consider the relationship between our natural and built realities, while also reflecting upon the importance of diversity that he shows by creating this vast and varied ecosystem.
Dzia is an Antwerp-based street artist. The Belgian muralist has been adding fauna flair to walls in an increasingly widening swath across the globe. Recent projects have taken him to China, Norway, and Spain. Classically trained with a masters in fine art at the Royal Academy in Antwerp, primarily depicts wild animals — foxes and birds seem to be recurring favorites. His unique style creates a medley of colours following the contours of the animal’s form. In his more recent work, Dzia has begun to add tonal shading within each defined area, adding a sense of volume to the well-defined figures.
