Untitled: Chifumi
by Chifumi
Created by French muralist Chifumi in Kannagi Art District, Chennai, this large-scale mural draws on the artist’s recurring language of hands and mudras, combining the colours of the peacock with symbolic hand gestures. Chifumi’s practice uses the hand as a universal form of communication, drawing from the gestures of Apsaras in Cambodia and sacred mudras in India. For this work, he describes the gesture as a reflection on “opening the inner goodness in us”, while emphasising the role of public art as a way of connecting with communities. The mural extends Chifumi’s engagement with Indian visual traditions that began with his earlier Padma Mudra mural in Delhi’s Lodhi Art District, translating his distinctive hand-based visual vocabulary into the context of Kannagi Nagar.
