by Bhajju Shyam
Bhajju Shyam (1971) is a leading figure in Gond art, originating from Patangarh, Madhya Pradesh, home to the Gond Pradhan tribe. Gond art began as a tradition of decorating walls during festivals, symbolizing spiritual energy.
Bhajju started by coloring works of his uncle, Jangarh Singh Shyam, a Gond art pioneer. Over time, he developed a unique style blending traditional folklore with contemporary stories. He has published books in five languages and received the Padma Shri in 2018. Bhajju Shyam’s work merges traditional Gond art with modern elements. His visits to Delhi inspired a mural reflecting the city's diverse population, symbolized by the clever fox. This mural resulted from a residency with St+art India Foundation and Asian Paints, aiming to modernize Indian art. During the residency, Bhajju experimented with street art techniques, including stenciling and spray painting.
