Unity
by Priyesh Trivedi
Priyesh Trivedi (1990) is a self-taught visual artist and designer from Mumbai. His work explores popular culture through subversion and irony. He created ‘Adarsh Balak’, a parody series of Indian educational posters from the 80s and 90s, which gained a cult following on social media for its nostalgic and dark humor. Priyesh has exhibited at venues like TIFA Working Studios, Gasworks, and Crypt Gallery, and was listed in Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 in 2017. Expanding on the Adarsh Balak series, Priyesh created his first public art piece in Lodhi Colony, using familiar characters to satirize the concept of ‘Unity’ in society. While his canvases are provocative, his public art maintains his signature irony yet avoids the trend of ‘beautification’ in street art. His piece stands out for its ambiguous, disturbing character, with deformed children’s bodies juxtaposed against a message of collective unity. This contrast aims to engage the public and encourage reflection on social interactions.
