K.R. Flower Market

by Shilo Shiv Suleman

In Bangalore’s K.R. Market, one of Asia’s largest flower markets, artist Shilo Shiv Suleman created a mural for St+art Bangalore 2016. As founder of The Fearless Collective, Suleman is known for blending gender and art-based activism. Inspired by the market's vibrant colors and the gentle energy of men selling flowers, she explored masculinity's softer side. Shilo spent seven days engaging with vendors, asking reflective questions like “Does handling flowers cultivate gentleness?” Her mural depicts two men emerging from flowers, weaving a jasmine garland, symbolizing strength with tenderness. Although vendors initially resisted, suggesting a king or film star, dialogue helped Shilo gain support. The mural honors K.R. Market’s people, reclaiming public space and promoting gentleness in a traditionally masculine environment.
