44th Chess Olympiad Murals

by Johnson Singh Kshetrimayum, Vishwa……… Show more

In celebration of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Tamil Nadu, St+art India Foundation created two large murals on the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) head office walls. Dedicated to the event's mascot, 'Thambi,' these murals were commissioned by TNUHDB to honor the city's chess heritage and enliven Chennai’s urban landscape.

The murals, located off Marina Beach on Kamarajar Road, explore two aspects of 'Thambi.' One mural shows Thambi in a commanding stance with Chennai’s cityscape, symbolizing Tamil Nadu’s chess dominance, home to 26 of India’s 74 Grandmasters. The other mural depicts a gentler side of Thambi, reflecting Tamil Nadu's grounded yet ambitious spirit as a global chess hub.
