Ukkadam Hyper Park
Project: HyperPark
Location: Ukkadam, Coimbatore
Date: 2024
Concept/Description:
The HyperPark project is an intervention in Ukkadam as part of the fourth edition of the Ukkadam Art District (UAD). Since 2020, UAD has actively engaged with the Ukkadam community, creating public art that resonates with local culture and heritage while addressing social and environmental themes. This ongoing relationship has built strong ties between St+art India and the community, inspiring a new direction for the 2024 edition—a permanent, community-centred space designed to deepen the impact of this engagement.
HyperPark, a multipurpose park, embodies the theme of “Our Hyper Park,” focusing on reclaiming and transforming public space to address Ukkadam’s pressing need for accessible open areas. Evolving from a former dumping ground into a vibrant community hub, the park prioritises inclusivity and functionality, especially for homemakers, children, and the wider Ukkadam populace. By shifting from murals to a lasting shared space, HyperPark strengthens St+art India’s commitment to community placemaking.
Inspired by “tactical urbanism,” HyperPark combines low-cost, scalable urban interventions with sustainable materials. The park features upcycled construction waste, recycled plastic bottles, and paint buckets repurposed as floor pavers, fence art, and dustbins, highlighting an environmentally conscious approach. Colour-coded zones—study, play, interactive, relaxation, and community—allow flexible use, accommodating a range of activities from social gatherings to solitary reflection.
The park’s design encourages interaction across all age groups, with play areas, ergonomic seating, and multipurpose spaces that adapt to the community's evolving needs. Through thoughtful zoning and material choices, HyperPark fosters a sense of belonging and shared ownership, transforming Ukkadam’s urban landscape into a resilient, inclusive environment.
